Press Command+Space and type Terminal and press enter/return key. Try a scan at full dpi resolution on something bigger than 35mm. If Vuescan doesn't automatically reduce the dpi to half then you're good to go. Even if it does you're likely to not really need that much resolution. Did Ed ever return your email? Hamrick Software has released a new version of its flagship OS X app, VueScan. The piece of software assists Mac users in producing quality scans, allowing tweaks to color balance, and more. Version 8.5.27 for Mac improves the auto strip film alignment with Nikon film scanners and fixes a Snow Leopard bug, among changes. VueScan enables the user to tweak and fine-tune the scanning parameters. The program uses its own independent method to interface with scanner hardware, and can support many older scanners under computer operating systems for which drivers are not available, allowing old scanners to be used with newer platforms which do not otherwise support them.[9]

It’s incredibly simple to use, with a neat wizard-based approach to scanning for the novice, and an Advanced button for those with a bit more experience. The results are impressive, and it’s worth considering even if your scanner is currently supported by Windows. You can output to JPEG, TIF, PDF and even access OCR-capabilities for extracting text from scanned images – English is provided by default, download other language files from here. VueScan can also output your scan directly to your printer, effectively turning your existing equipment into a serviceable photocopying machine. I have an old Mustek SE A3 USB 2400 Scanner that stopped working after I upgraded my Mac to High Sierra. I can't seem to get either the driver from the Mustek website or a fresh download of VueScan to work. VueScan is not showing in my printer list either. How to Fully Uninstall VueScan on Mac (Two Options) 1) Thought I could use some sort of free version for basic scanning use. I did and when I reviewed my scanned document it had 'Vue Scan Buy it now' written all over, so it made it unexploitable. I imported the filtered image into Photoshop Elements to see if it could be further improved upon, but all I ended up doing after some experimentation was increasing the color saturation by 18%, and I'm not sure it's a significant improvement. VueScan pretty much got it right the first time. Happy to report that my trashcan Mac Pro did update to Mojave without obvious problems and that Vuescan works perfectly with my old scanner under Mojave.
